The Mazda 5 is a perfect blend of comfort, space and flexibility all wrapped up into a family car, using the same platform as the Mazda3 including a sporty drive. The new 2011 upgraded Mazda5 provides comfortable transport for any occasion, with a unique seat-folding system offering several seating configuration.
The first Mazda5 was launched in Japan in 1999 and bacame very popular in various Asian markets. The spacious Mazda 5 replaced the previous Mazda MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle). The first generation was equipped with a 2.0L 133HP engine.
The second generation Mazda 5 arrived in Canada in 2005 with a 2.3L, 159HP engine, using the Ford C1 platform which is also used by the Mazda 3, Ford Focus and Volvo S40. While the Mazda5 is classified by Mazda as a full size station wagon, in the US and Canada it competes in the mini-minivan category and the MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle). Competition joined the North American MPV market in 2006 with the Mercedes-Benz B200, in 2007 Kia joined the MPV market with the Kia Rondo in the US and Canada.
Due to safety regulations in Canada the Mazda 5 seats six passengers using three rows of seats, with 2 seats per row, while in Japan its marketed as a seven passenger vehicle with the seventh seat being a fold away seat in the centre of the middle row.
In 2008 the Mazda5 received slight remodel with an updated front bumper, wheels, and rear LED lights. The automatic transmission was upgraded to a 5-speed. The interior received a few minor changes to the dash including luminescent gauges, a new CD/radio unit including MP3 input, a rear A/C vent and a set of armrests for the first and second rows on the Mazda5 Canada models.
The 2012 Mazda 5 now includes a few more safety features like the electronic stability control and traction control. The Canadian Car of the Year awards named the Mazda 5 as the "Best New Multipurpose Family Vehicle" in the 2006 and Consumer Reports ranked the Mazda5 as the best "tall wagon" in their tests.
The third generation Mazda5 was debuted at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show and is being sold as a 2011 Mazda5 model in Japan, it was available in Canada in the spring of 2011.
